» Feature Writer Lynn Smythe - Do You Harvest Herbs in the Wild?

I'm just curious if anyone else ever gets any of their herbs from the wild? My last house was surround by three empty lots which had a variety of weeds, some of which were edible, growing on them.

The problem I have with wildcrafting is how to safely identify the plants to make cetain you are harvesting the correct plant. I own two wild plants reference books which I can refer to when in doubt.

Edible Wild Plants & Useful Herbs by Jim Meuninck is a 72 page books with color photographs of all the plants listed. The book is divided into sections according to what habitat the plant can be found in: woodlands, mountains, wetlands, meadows, etc...

A larger, but more helpful book, is Edible Wild Plants; A North American Field Guide. This book is 286 pages long and contains larger photos than the other book. This book is divided into sections according to when the particular plant you are trying to identify is in season: winter, spring, summer or fall.
